Vera House Sober Living has been in existence in Hemet, CA since April of 2003.

Vera House is a serious sober living home implementing a zero tolerance policy. This policy keeps Vera House a safe and sober home. If you are serious about your sobriety and would like to live with other men who are like-minded concerning sobriety, please consider Vera House as your future home.

The success rate for rehabilitation from addictions to alcohol and drugs is greatly increased by completing a rehab program and then residing in a good sober living home. One of the first questions we ask is if you have been through a rehab program. If not, that is our recommendation. After completing the rehab program, Vera House is the next step that has given many men what they need to stay sober after they have the foundation and the tools to stay sober.

Vera House offers affordable housing with an environment that is supportive and sober in order to get back on your own feet. Bedrooms are shared, utilities are included, and laundry facilities are also included. The other guests in the home will encourage your success and hold you accountable for your sobriety. Every person there desires to be with others they can trust and know that all people living at and visiting the house are sober. The guests of Vera House live together as a family of disabled people dealing with their addictions. In very practical ways they live just as any family. Chores are assigned to all guests and changed each week so that each guest has the opportunity to do all the different chores from kitchen to yard work. The guests also pool together money each week in order to buy groceries and cleaning supplies for the house. The buying power for good nutritious food is greatly increased by pooling these funds. Problems such as stealing food from others and the tension this could cause are eliminated through this method of supplying food for all and all must participate. This program is completely handled by the guests. The owner of Vera House is not involved in the food program. The guests also take turns cooking dinner four nights of the week, Monday through Thursday. It does not matter if you are a good cook or a bad cook. Everyone’s cooking gets eaten. One thing that is true in the history of Vera House is no one has lost weight while living there.

Another very important aspect of Vera House is the belief that it is desirable to mend bonds with family, especially the children of guests. Guests are encouraged to have visits with their families and to have their families visit them at Vera House. The home is to be kept family friendly including pictures, magazines and language. Family members need to be able to trust that their children will not be exposed to what they would not see or hear in their own home. Trust between guests and families is usually very damaged by the addiction of the guest. Many guests have been able, over time and with patience and just doing what is right, to experience acceptance and relationship with family members they thought would never be possible. Vera House has been privileged to be a part of the healing of lives and rejoice with those who have been helped.

Another consideration for guests is the zero tolerance policy of Vera House Sober Living. Some homes call themselves “sober living” but turn themselves into something else by allowing people to use drugs and drink. The poor person that truly is working on staying sober but finds himself in an environment where he is with others that are using and tempting him has probably lost any advantage he hoped to find by living in a sober living for his sobriety. Vera House is committed to sobriety for the benefit of all who live there. This means there are no second chances. Using will definitely take away the roof over your head. Other guests want their home to be sober and will not allow someone’s use to be overlooked. Once a guest is asked to leave, he is not allowed to move back no matter what steps he takes to do better after leaving. People who leave in good standing and wish to come back are allowed to do so.

Although we do not direct your program for staying sober, we do require each guest to do certain minimal actions that we may know the guest is working his own program. These actions include attending five meetings a week if working, ten meetings a week if not working (meetings include AA, NA, church and mandatory once a week mandatory house meeting). Each guest must also search out a sponsor and a commitment to give back.
